This seamless mix re-imagines the Pet Shop Boys’ 1999 album Nightlife as euphoric and sleazy as its tantalizing title promises. The original was created with disparate producers in different styles, with some songs and other concepts overlapping with the simultaneously developed Closer to Heaven musical. Between the original album, the Closer to Heaven cast recording, and the 2017 reissue of Nightlife with two bonus discs of contemporaneously recorded but unused material, there was more than enough to inspire this alternate universe version that’s mean to be a nocturnal adventure into the twilight of 1990s house and techno-tinged pop.

Like my Fragile project, I imposed some rules on this fan fiction: all the tracks had to come from this specific era of recordings, nothing before or after; and all the music had to come from PSB or their direct Nightlife album collaborators, no outside remixers. Unlike my Fragile project, I didn’t drastically re-edit any of these songs except for “Positive Role Model,” which I spliced together using the original Neil Tennant vocal version and the Paul Keating version from the Closer to Heaven album, creating a kind of duet.

In keeping with the ‘90s club night spirit, this DJ mix was recorded live on two (virtual) decks and in one take, hence the name Nightlive.
